
The Austrian baritone Liviu Holender (born 1992) received his musical education in his hometown of Vienna, where he studied clarinet at the University of Music and Performing Arts and piano at the Conservatory. Starting in 2013, he received vocal training at the University of Music in Vienna under Karlheinz Hanser and privately with Wicus Slabbert. In addition, he completed a master’s degree in law.
Since the 2019/20 season, Liviu Holender has been a member of the ensemble at Frankfurt Opera, where he has sung a versatile repertoire consisting of roles such as Don Alfonso (Cosi fan tutte), Faninal (Der Rosenkavalier), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Hans (Der Traumgörge), Olivier (Capriccio), Henrik (Maskerade), Peter Besenbinder (Hänsel und Gretel) among others.
Guest appearances brought him to Teatro alla Scala, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Firenze, Bregenzer Festspiele, Teatro Communale di Bologna, Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, Latvian National Opera Riga and the Bucharest National Opera.
Highlights of the recent seasons were his role debut as Marcello (La Bohème) at the National Opera Cluj-Napoca in Romania and at the Croatian National Opera Zagreb under the direction of Piergiorgio Morandi and his debut at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Donner in Das Rheingold. He appeared twice at the Bregenz Festival in Der Freischütz (Ottokar) and Rigoletto (Marullo) and at the Spring Festival Tokyo, where he sang Schaunard in La Bohème and Herrufer (Lohengrin).
In concert, he sang Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem at the Maggio Musicale in Florence with Daniele Gatti and at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna with Hartmut Haenchen. He also sang Jesus (Matthäuspassion) with Franz Welser-Möst and the Wiener Philharmoniker and made his debut at the Schubertiade in Hohenems, where he performed songs by Franz Schubert and Gustav Mahler.
Highlights of his 2025/26 season include his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele as Morales in Carmen and various new roles in Frankfurt such as Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte) and Ping (Turandot), as well as Choregos in Harrison Britwistle’s Punch and Judy. With the George Enescu Philharmonic under Michele Mariotti, he will perform Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem.
