Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Gabrielė Kupšytė is a member of the Jette Parker Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. She has been nominated in the ‘Young Singer’ category at the International Opera Awards 2023. She recieved an award from Global Lithuanian Awards for promoting Lithuania Globally. In 2023 she was given the Opera Hope of the Year award at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Her work in London has involved working with conductors such as Nicola Luisotti, Maxim Emelyanychev, Semyon Bychkov and Sir Antonio Pappano; and she has also made her debut in the National Opera House of her native country as Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) conducted by Sesto Quatrini.
2023/24 season for the Royal Opera House, she will sing Mercédès (Carmen), Third Maid (Elektra) and Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) at the Royal Opera House, as well as covering Preziosilla (La Forza del Destino), Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte) and Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana). She will also make her debut at the Royal Albert Hall, singing Laura in Tchaikovsky's Iolanta with Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Gabrielė is a graduate of the Mascarade Opera Studio in Florence and holds an Advanced Diploma in Opera from the Royal Academy of Music, London. She previously graduated with honours in Vocal Studies from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. During her time at RAM, she was a recipient of the Carr-Gregor Trust Scholarship and the Isabel Jay Memorial Prize for Singing. She twice attended the George Solti Accademia, where she worked with Roberto Frontali, Barbara Frittoli, Grace Bumbry and Richard Bonynge.
Previous roles for the Royal Opera House include Second Lady (The Magic Flute), Second Nymph (Rusalka), Flora Bervoix (Traviata), Ines (Il Trovatore), the title role in Arminio (Handel) in the Linbury Theatre and cover for the role of Charlotte (Werther). Roles outside of the Royal Opera House have included Romeo in ‘I Capuleti e i Montecchi’ (Lithuanian National Opera House), the title role in ‘La Cenerentola’ (New Generation Festival), Véronique in ‘Le docteur Miracle’ (L’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève), the title role of ‘Chérubin’ (Royal Academy Opera), Prince Athamas in ‘Semele’ (RAO), The Dog in ‘The Cunning Little Vixen’ (RAO), and La chatte/L’écureuil in ‘L’enfant et les sortilèges’ (RAO).
From the 2024/25 season, Gabrielė will join the ensemble of Oper Leipzig, where her roles will include Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) and Wellgunde (Das Rheingold).
